Pushkar Ogale - Nov 2, 2001

Application: Home Theater
What I Like: I picked up the xp-5t as I read good reviews. I think the colors were good on the unit but I could never get it to look real life until I figured out that I had to turn the green and blue levels down a lot. The picture in all honesty was good but not comparable in any way to the CD-555m(lp-350 clone) that I now have settled on.
Suggestions: It needs at least 30% more brightness and a lot more contrast as I kept getting only flat images in dark scenes. I tried fiddling with component vs s-video, but no satisfaction. The component video input was slightly better than s-video. The LCD panel had flaws with at least 20 % or more of the screen showing green blobs and tinting. I think the new Sanyo XW-20 may be provide the additional capability that I was looking for.
Comments: My comments to the manufacturer(Sanyo) would be: 1) LCD panels on the unit seemed un-uniform, with red tint on the left half of screen and yellow/green tint on right half of the screen. Any adjustment on one side would throw the other half more to the extreme tint. As a result I could never get myself into the movies I was watching.

2) What good is the quality control if you can send unit to the market where at least 25% on the screen is draped in a green tint which never goes away. It is a defect and looks like manufacturer gets away with calling it 80% uniformity or something on the spec sheet.

I returned the unit for a CD-555m. Now that is a unit which really has no comparison with a simple S-video setup.

What I Like: The price! Component inputs. Picture quality will satisfy most people. Contact Adam McCourt at adam@studioexperience.com for a great deal. He is very helpful and Studio Experience has a 30 day return policy which no one else seems to offer. I got two projectors, compared them side-by-side and returned one with no restocking fee!
Suggestions: I compare the SP5t SVGA unit to the Infocus LP340 which is a DLP unit. The colors were richer on the SVGA!
Comments: The Boxlight SP5T is really a bargain compared to other projectors. I compared this side by side with the Infoucs LP340 and thought the Boxlight had a sharper and richer picture. Depending on how close you sit next to the projector, you can see pixels, but the picture was no better with the LP340 which was $700 more. Even at 700 lumens there is not a significant diference between this and the 1300 lumens Infoucs. This is a good choice for the home theater.
