BenQ TH670 1080p Projector Review

Marc Davidson, May 4, 2016

Limitations

Color quality. The less-than-excellent, if more-than-acceptable, color quality is arguably the TH670's most important limitation. But if you want a 1080p projector with better color quality, you'll have to up your budget by at least $200.

Limited connectivity. The TH670 offers a composite video connection and, of course, a VGA port for a PC. However, there's only one HDMI port, the port doesn't support MHL, and the projector can't read files directly from a USB memory key.

Fan noise. Although fan noise is actually less of a problem than with many sub-$1000 1080p models, you still need to consider it. If you're sensitive to fan noise, you'll want to be sure you can position the projector far enough away so you won't hear it.

Conclusion

The BenQ TH670 will be of obvious interest if you want an inexpensive 1080p projector for either business presentations or home entertainment. It will be of even more interest if you want a single projector that can handle both roles, which isn't true of all inexpensive 1080p models. For business use, it does an excellent job of holding fine detail in text or line drawings. For home entertainment use, it adds good to near-excellent quality for video, depending on the preset color mode, and a fast-enough lag time for all but the most serious gaming.

For both types of applications, the TH670 does a good job of avoiding showing rainbow artifacts, and it offers lower fan noise than much of the competition. It's also bright enough with its brightest color preset for a 135" image in moderate ambient light, whether in a conference room or family room. With its best color quality preset, it's easily bright enough for the 80" image I used for testing with nighttime levels of ambient light in a family room. Add in the light weight and small size for easy portability, and the BenQ TH670 is a strong contender whether you need an inexpensive 1080p projector for business, home, or both.

I'm in the market for an inexpensive home theater 3d projector. Does this projector use passive or active 3D? Also are any other accessories needed for 3D playback other than a #D capable device such as a 3D bluray or Xbox One? I've noticed that some I've looked at require an emitter for active glasses. Thanks
