BenQ TH670 1080p Projector Review

Marc Davidson, May 4, 2016

Set Up

We have preloaded the throw data for the BenQ TH670 into the Projection Calculator so you can determine the TH670's available throw distance range for your preferred screen size. As a point of reference, it throws a 120" 16:9 image from a range of about 13' to a little more than 15.5'.

According to BenQ, with the projector sitting on a table, the bottom of the image is 16% of the image height above the midline of the lens plus or minus 2.5%, or about 9.5" above for a 120" image, with a range of 8" to 11". We measured the unit provided for testing at the high end of the range.

The offset is designed to work with the projector on a table or inverted in a ceiling mount. If you need to tilt it to match the image to the screen height, you can adjust for vertical keystone distortion at up to plus or minus 30 degrees using either manual or automatic keystone correction. There's no horizontal keystone correction.

Installation Trade-offs

Keep in mind that the brightness for high-pressure lamps typically drops by about 25% in the first 500 hours of use, and then continues to decline at a much slower rate over the remaining lamp life.

There are two easy ways to counter the declining lamp brightness. First, make sure the initial brightness for the lamp in Economic mode can deliver a suitably bright image at the size you want. When the lamp ages enough so you need a boost in brightness, you can simply switch to Normal lamp mode. You might also consider using one of the lower-brightness preset modes to start with, then switching to brighter modes as the lamp ages. However, this has the shortcoming that the brightest mode has noticeably poorer color quality than the lower-brightness modes.

I'm in the market for an inexpensive home theater 3d projector. Does this projector use passive or active 3D? Also are any other accessories needed for 3D playback other than a #D capable device such as a 3D bluray or Xbox One? I've noticed that some I've looked at require an emitter for active glasses. Thanks
