The Twenty Smallest Portable SVGA Projectors
Plus U2-870 (also NEC MultiSync LT84)
Until the recent announcements of the Epson 500c and Sony CS1, the Plus U2-870 was the smallest SVGA projector on the market. At 255 cubic inches, its extremely small profile is still one of its major advantages. Only the Sony, which is the same size, and the Epson which is just a hair smaller, can match it.
However, with an MSRP of $5,995, and street prices just under $4,000, the U2-870 will encounter stiff competition from the Sony CS1. Here is how they compare:
| Features | Sony VLP-CS1 | Plus U2-870 |
| ANSI Lumens | 600 | 700 |
| Carrying weight | 6.4 lbs | 5.6 lbs |
| Max. resolution | SXGA | XGA |
| Zoom lens | 1.3:1 manual | 1.2:1 manual |
| Size in cubic inches | 255 | 255 |
| Lamp wattage | 120 | 120 |
| Lamp life | 2000 hours | 1000 hours |
In a head-to-head competition, the Plus has a slight edge in weight and lumen output. The Sony has the advantage with its 1.3:1 zoom, twice the lamp life, and the ability to take an SXGA signal. At the moment, the Sony also has a huge advantage in price with a street price that is $1,300 under that of the Plus. Size is not an issue as both units are 255 cubic inches.
As noted elsewhere, the 100 ANSI lumen differential is not a significant factor, since the humen eye cannot tell much difference between 600 and 700 lumens. However, for some buyers the weight difference of 0.8 lb may be a consideration. For those who intend to put a lot of hours on their projector, the relatively short 1000 lamp life of the U2-870 may be an important factor in cost of ownership.
The U2-870 offers no performance advantage that can justify the $1,300 street price premium over the CS1. The street price of the Plus will need to drop by at least 25% if this unit is to remain a viable contender in the marketplace.
NEC MultiSync LT84
Plus manufactures the LT84 with the same casework and optics engine that is in the U2-870, but the product incorporates NEC electronics. NEC currently lists this product at $5,995, and it is selling for about $4,000. The comments pertaining to the U2-870 apply to this product as well.
