There are two very exciting technologies featured in this video from the Human Media Lab at Queen's University in Canada. The first is Telehuman which is basically a life sized cylindrical telepresence pod and a milestone toward seeing the fulfillment of my greatest Star Trek technology fantasies.
With Telehuman, people in different locations are able to videoconference with a a life-size 3D holographic image of another person. Using six microsoft Kinect sensors, the 3D image is captured and a 3D projector in the cylinder's base gives the illusion that the participant is standing in the display. It is a life size surround image. The same team created Bodipod which will eventually rock the world of medicine as users are able to gesture and peel off layers of tissue to allow deeper examination of the human body via an interactive 3D model. Watch the video to understand. We are on our way.
