Mobile Projector Mini-Reviews
PLUS U5-632H

Bill Livolsi, April 14, 2006

Key Features: Black and White mode, high lumen output, laser pointer

Shortcomings: Color performance

The PLUS U5-632H is capable of producing some serious light, thanks to its unique "black and white" mode which removes the color wheel from the image path. As such, in "dynamic" mode with the lamp on high and B&W mode, the 632H produces 2214 ANSI lumens - just a touch short of the stated 2300 ANSI lumen maximum, and easily enough to make it the brightest projector in this shootout. This mode is quite good for text documents or other data where color is absent, such as spreadsheets. With the color turned back on, our test unit produced 1523 ANSI lumens still in presentation mode. With color optimized for photography, lumen output was 632 ANSI. Coupled with a laser pointer on the remote control and wireless mouse capability, the 632H is capable of displaying presentation data on a conference room or small auditorium-sized screen, while allowing you to move freely around the presentation environment.

However, in exchange for high lumen output, color performance suffers. Our test unit was biased heavily towards green, and our adjustments could not eliminate this bias. So while the 632H is ideal for text and spreadsheets, it is decidedly less than ideal for photography or video use. If you're looking for a mobile projector that puts out a tremendous amount of light for text and spreadsheet use, the PLUS U5-632H can't be beaten.
