Personal Experience
I bought this unit at the local Circuit City over one year ago for $999. Also paid an extra $144 for an extended warranty that covers bulbs for four years which, as it turns out, was well worth the extra money.
I am using this projector for a low budget home theatre. I'm displaying on a wall painted with flat Behr paint (color is called SilverScreen). I have to say the picture is great with good color and no rainbow effects noticed at all. I am also displaying high def on this unit through a Samsung off-air high def tuner and the picture is fantastic. While this unit does support both a 720p and 1080i signal, it is in fact a native 4/3 format XGA projector. Others have pointed out that this unit is therefore, not a "true" high def projector and they're probably right. But you know what, I don't care. All I know is, the high definition image displayed from this unit is so good, it sometimes feels like you could walk right on to the screen.
That said.. with all of the confusion on copy protection of high def movies and upscaling of standard movies, etc.. I wish this unit had an HDCP compliant HDMI port. In fact, I would think twice about buying any type of display unit for home theater use without HDCP support. Then again.. this unit can now be had for less than $700. If HD-DVD or Blu-Ray is not a concern then in my opinion, it's hard to beat the picture for the price. As you'll see from the problems section below, GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTEE THAT COVERS BULBS.

Problems
Like some other's have reported, the bulb on my unit went early with no warning (@780 hours in my case). In fact the bulb didn't just die it instead exploded into tiny little pieces. Since the unit had been on for around 2 hours, hot glass melted itself into the plastic inside the unit and made a real mess. My extended warranty company mailed me a new bulb, but stated that cleaning the unit was not covered. So off to Sharp repair it went to be repaired under Sharp's three year warrantee. When the unit came back from repair the first time, it was a complete mess, with a loose lens, scratched case and hot spots displaying everywhere. It did however have a new bulb in it at no cost to me. Since this unit is over one year old, I'm wondering if Sharp is beginning to make good on this bulb problem.
To Sharps credit the second trip to repair went much better. The turnaround time was good, they paid for all of the overnight shipping, and did finally get the unit fixed correctly. In fact, my wife and I both noticed that for some reason, the picture seems to look better now then it did when the unit was new. End result.. unit is working better than ever and I now have an extra bulb.
