I replaced my year old Mits HC3000U 720P DLP three weeks ago with the W5000. I am using it with a Panamorph UH380 anamorphic lens on a 108x45.5 2.37:1 screen. The image quality is simply stunning. Extremely sharp and detailed. While watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I was struck by just how 3-D the image was, like I was looking through the screen rather than at it. Contrast is excellent with Dynamic Black (dynamic iris or DI) on, with little in the way of brightness compression or other common DI artifacts. Absolute black levels could be better, but are still very good. However, if black level is your number 1 priority, you would do better with an RS1 or 1080UB. Colors are nice and rich without over doing it, and skin tones are very natural. The things that sold me on the W5000 vs. other sub $4000 1080P units were the sealed light path (no dust blobs), zero panel alignment issues with single chip dlp and built in anamorphic stretch. No other machine in its price range offers all that. As for the much discussed 'image noise', it has been a non issue for me. Watch a quality source like a good Blu-ray or HD-DVD, and there is no noise issue. To sum up, you could spend 2 or even 3 times the $2100 this unit streets for, and have a picture that was no better than the W5000 98% of the time. I used the money I saved and bought the UH380 and couldn't be happier.
