This was a top of the line projector when it was released in the late 90's, and one of the most powerful projectors then on the market. However projector technology has advanced quite a bit since then and the 8660's specs now look distinctly average. The 1100 lumens rating is still reasonable (especially as it uses a metal-halide lamp, which are usually brighter than halogen), but the contrast ratio of 200:1 is distinctly below par (budget dlp projectors from HP score up to 2000:1). It also lacks modern features such as keystone adjustment and short throw projection.
The low native resolution (800x600), cost of replacement lamps (£650) and its sheer size and weight now makes it only suitable for occasional home cinema use. It certainly isn't portable by any stretch of the imagination. On the plus side it is built to last, is easy to use and is a second-hand bargain. |
