Personal Experience
I saw this projector at the Home Enteraiment Show in NYC and was also very impressed. I sat pretty close to the screen and watched a few movie trailers that they had on Blu-Ray Disc, (the new High definition DVD format that is in Japan now and expected to arrive here in the U.S. next year holding 27GB per disc, 54GB disc is also in the works). The images were absolutely astounding with no visible scan lines or pixel grid. Fine details came in nicely, and hard edges like the type on titles were exceptionally sharp and smooth. I heard that Speildberg got the 2 of the first three units for sale and the rapper 50cent got the other one. Take my ratings with a grain of salt since I only got to see it for 15 minutes and I cannot fairly evaluate it's construction, ease of use, reliability etc.. Don't forget, you have to spend another 3,000 on a lens for this projector and the bulb cost is pretty high ($1-2,000?).
Depsite love at first sight, I later found a couple more projectors at the same show from JVC due later this year which stole my heart away from the Sony due to smaller size and lower operating costs. The JVC DLA-HD2K is a true HD (1920 x 1080), 3-chip, 13 pound projector. It is much smaller and lighter than Sony's 88 pound offering. It cost about the same as the Sony ($30K) and has a 3-chip design using the JVC's patented D-ILA chips, the most highly refined form of LCOS chip. The DLA-HD2K uses a 250W ultra high-pressure mercury NSH lamp that is much cheaper to replace and lasts longer than sony's bulb. JVC claims that the image is just as good as a Xenon lamp due to special filters. In most applications, the lamp can be easily changed by the homeowner without removing the projector from its mounts.
JVC reps claimed thier bulb is only $500 and lasts longer (50% to 100% sorry again for not taking notes.) JVC also had a similar projector for about half the price with a very good, but lower resolution 1500 x 1000 resolution (appx--from memory). I think we are heading into an exciting time for digital video projectors. Perhaps digital film is a better way to put it?
