Personal Experience
I just purchased the Epson TW100 in Europe. Picture is very bright and clear. Looks brighter than 700 Lumens would suggest. Resolution is excellent - we watch it on a 2 metre wide screen from a viewing distance of 3.3 metres. Contrast is really good but black is not absolutely black - you notice this on the borders of the picture so good masking would be helpful. Overall picture quality is stunning - a combination of different factors I think. Resolution, colour fidelity, contrast, brightness and great image processing all make the picture pop. Even old VHS movies look acceptable (at least, no worse than on a TV) which really surprised me. Digital TV looks good too, depending on the original source material. For most viewing I use a Denon 2800 Mk2 - that is a great combination although I do wonder if having a progressive scan chip in both the DVD player and the projector is worthwhile. The advantage of the DCDi processor in the projector is that it works with all sources, not just DVD. I'll need more time to compare the Silicon Image chip with the Faroudja chip to see which one to use for DVD movies.

Although the projector is comparatively quiet in comparision with other LCD/DLP projectors, I would say this is probably the most critical issue when one upgrades from a TV to a projector. However it is not at all intrusive when watching any movies or TV programs, it is simply that the room ambience has changed when the music stops. I would liken it to my office which has an air conditioning unit. You can hear it but after a while it becomes part of the room's ambience.

Before buying I compared it to the Marantz VP12S. There was a very marginal improvement with dark scenes with the Marantz but nothing that justified the extra 7000 Euros, at least in my opinion.

Overall we are very pleased with the product. Just after setting up I put in a DVD of the Corrs in concert. My wife just sat there and watched the whole thing, even though it is quite an old DVD. For me that says a lot more about the picture quality than a hundred measurements.
