Upcoming Home Theater Reviews

Preliminary notes on a pre-production sample of the Mitsubishi HC3800 have just been posted. Once we get a final production sample, we will replace these notes with a full review. In addition, we currently have several new home theater projectors in review that have either been released or are about to be released.

On the schedule right now are the Vivitek H9080HD, the Sony VPL-VW15, the Samsung A600, and the BenQ W6000, reviews of which will all be posted in the next two weeks. Three more models that we can't mention yet are scheduled to arrive shortly. So we will be extremely busy doing side by side comparisons and getting the reviews done as soon as possible.

Epson will be announcing four new 1080p models next week. Among them will be the Powerlite Home Cinema 8500 UB, a model that replaces last year's 6500 UB. New or upgraded features on the 8500 UB include a whopping 200,000:1 contrast ratio, a substantially upgraded frame interpolation system, and a new Super Resolution feature that renders additional sharpness and detail without traditional edge enhancement. We saw this unit in action last week. It definitely has a WOW factor that will create a lot of buzz. Expect long lines at Epson's booth on the CEDIA show floor. We will get the 8500UB in for review right after the show.

The CEDIA trade show in Atlanta will happen next week, Sept 9-13, so be prepared for a lot of news. In general, this is shaping up to be a very exciting product release season. The stuff we've seen so far is amazing.

I've been told that any 3D application requires HDMI "1.4" which has just recently been agreed upon. The only 3D presentations at Berlin's IFA not requiring double stacked projectors (JVC, LG) came from SONY and PANASONIC but were limited to flat screen presenations (I smell another format war coming...).

Rather than he SAMSUNG SP-A 600 I'd be more interested in an in-depth review of the SAMSUNG SP-A 900.

Keep up the good work!

Does the Epson 8500UB or the 6500UB have the capability of displaying Real D 3D movies? If not, are there any front projection units that can?
