Sony's Hot VPL-VWPRO1

Sony has been making fine video projectors for a long time, but dollar for dollar, this is the best one yet...

We've just posted Bill's review of the Sony VPL-VWPRO1. We've given it 5 stars for Performance and 5 stars for Value. In the past, while Sony's products have been exceptional, they have also been rather pricey compared to other models in the market with similar performance capability.

In the VWPRO1 we have a model which is priced at $3,400. That is $1200 more than the Epson 8700 UB, an excellent projector for the money in its own right. But the VWPRO1 delivers an incrementally more refined picture than the 8700 UB, and thus it is properly value priced at the moment.

We are still waiting for the Epson HC21000 to come out of hiding. It was supposed to have shown up in December, but there has been no sign of it yet. However, at $3,200, once it is released the HC21000 will compete directly with the Sony VWPRO1. That will be an interesting competition, to say the least.

I agree with Stuart on his comment dated March 16 regarding comparison of Panasonic AE4000U with Sony VPL-VWPro1. Since their inception, Projector Central have been testing Sony and Panny HT PJs and are the best to give a candid view. They will do a geat service to HT fans like me who wish to switch to Full HD and are confused between Sony and Panny

It would be interesting to compare the Panasonic AE4000 to the Sony VPL-VWPRO1. The Panasonic seems to be a favorite of Projector Central so it would be great to compare these projectors head to head. Any chance of this happening?

Speaking only on image quality, the Sony VPL-VWPRO1 costs twice as much as the Mitsubishi HC4000. The Mitsubishi performs as well on image quality, except deep black levels. You really have to love your deep blacks to reach that much deeper into your wallet.
