Brookstone HDMI Pocket Projector: A Display of Versatility
In my past reviews, the projectors I looked at were developed to be used primarily with the iPhone; the Brookstone HDMI Pocket Projector is not limited to Apple products. The only requirement is that your chosen device must have an HDMI output or available adapter. When using Apple products, you must purchase an Apple Digital AV adapter. Not only does the device offer a standard video mode, but it also contains one for presentations that adjusts for the text involved. With 85 lumens, this projector does not demand a pitch black room. Although a darker room with a white, smooth wall is optimal, I was able to use it throughout the day in my partially-lit living room. The LED light has a 20,000 hour life. The projector has two 1W speakers built into it, but it also provides an audio out jack so the user can plug in a more powerful speaker if needed. An overlooked advantage is the projector's ability to charge your smartphone when you find yourself in a bind. Never pass up a free boost of power.
We are entering a new era in entertainment. In my circles, we do not have the luxury of sitting on our couches for hours at night watching the television. We work full time jobs, and then we must shuttle our children to seemingly endless events and practices. We do not discuss the native resolutions of our over-priced televisions, nor does the size of our neighbor's home theater room ever enter a discussion. We want something that saves us money and can multi-task at the same intensity required of a soccer mom.
Over the course of two weeks, the Brookstone HDMI Pocket Projector has replaced the need for my 50 inch plasma TV. While using the projector side by side to my television, there were times when I chose the projector's picture quality over that of my TV. I know that my television has a 1920 x 1080 native resolution and should be preferred over the lower resolution of the projector. This was simply was not the case. This device uses a fraction of the amount of energy as my television and it can produce up to a 60 inch image, which is larger than my TV. Not only did I use it to watch American Horror Story via my cable box, but I also hooked it directly into my XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 gaming consoles. The projector can accept 1080p HD images, and even though it down-scales them to its 854 X 480 native resolution, FIFA Street will never be the same for me. The players were more defined, and the picture quality was sharp. It is also compact enough to easily move between rooms or take on a road trip. This is all impossible with my 100 pound flat panel TV. Obviously, this projector will not rival the state of the art entertainment systems; but for those of us who value convenience and functionality, we have found our projector.
This Brookstone projector is just as versatile in a formal setting as it is in the home. I utilized it along with my laptop to conduct a quick presentation on my soccer team's financial records. The text on the PowerPoint slides was bold and clear, the lines on the Excel worksheet were crisp, and the colors in the bar graphs were vivid. Also, the small size and quiet operation of the projector helped maintain audience focus.
Looking for additional applications and uses, I decided to share my sample with a professional photographer. When comparing the projected image to her original photographs her eyes detected a slight green tint. However, her interest in this projector came more from a business, price-for-performance and practicality standpoint. She was able connect her camera through the HDMI outlet, and quickly review shots as she took them. This way, she could decide if she needed to make adjustments within the session while the clients were still in the studio. The ability to review her work displayed 60 inches on her back wall gave her a distinct advantage over her competition. She saw it as a tremendous boon to be able to present clients with a unique way to select their favorite shots. As an added bonus, she'd be able to entertain her girls when they join her at work after school. It is this kind of multi-tasking that sets this projector apart and what makes it so uniquely attractive for the price of $299.
