LG Electronics brought plenty of new toys to CES in Las Vegas this week and will go home with something as well: a 2019 CES Innovations Award for its just-announced HU85L 4K ultra-short-throw laser projector.

LG HU85L 4K UST Laser Projector

LG's second UHD-resolution laser projector following last year's HU80K (which was honored with a ProjectorCentral Editor's Choice Award for the success of its unusual vertical design), the new CineBeam HU85L follows a more conventional UST console form factor. But it's hardly typical of the category. Like some other UST laser projectors that debuted at the show, it features a smart TV platform—in this case LG's well-established WebOS interface—to allow direct streaming of content from the popular video services.

Additionally, the inclusion of what LG calls "ThinQ AI technology" allows the use of voice commands via LG's ThinQ natural language control platform. This allows voice search of streaming services, for example, or the ability to "turn off the projector after the movie has finished." The included Magic Remote offers a microphone to enter voice commands and further allows gesture commands.

The HU85L offers a rated 2,500 lumens of output and 20,000 hours of life for its laser light source. Mated with a UST ambient light rejecting screen, as it was at the show, it should provide a suitably bright picture for most day-to-day living spaces. The 0.19 UST lens can throw a 90" image from just 2" away from the screen, or up to 120" from 7" away. Setup is simplified by an unusual 12-point keystone adjustment feature. For those who don't choose to attach the projector to an outboard sound system, a stereo audio system is integrated with the front panel.

Demonstrated at CES in prototype form, the HU85L is expected to reach market sometime this fall. Pricing was not yet formalized.
