NEW PRODUCT
NEC P605UL
WUXGA 3LCD Laser Projector

Rob Sabin, June 6, 2019

NEC-P605UL-leftangle

NEC has bolstered its entry-level P Series of projectors with the addition of the P605UL, a 6,000-lumen, WUXGA laser model that becomes the family's brightest yet. It follows seven pre-existing models that range from 4,700 to 5,500 lumens and span WXGA and WUXGA resolutions with lamp or laser light engines.

The key benefits of the P605UL pointed out by NEC are a sealed 20,000-hour laser engine that eliminates the need for a filter and reduces maintenance, and unusually quiet operation that could be a significant benefit in classrooms, museums, or other locations where high brightness is required for ambient light viewing in close proximity to the projector. The company's Whisper Quiet technology involves the use of a patented sealed cooling engine that allows NEC to proclaim this the quietest 6,000-lumen projector on the market. Typical projectors in this class are said by NEC to generate an average of more than 37 decibels of noise, versus the 19 dB the P605UL generates in its Eco mode. (The P605UL shares this feature with the P502WL-2, a sister product we reviewed earlier this year.)

All the usual benefits of a 3LCD architecture also apply here, of course, including equal white and color brightness and immunity to the rainbow artifacts that can afflict single-chip DLP projectors that rely on a color wheel to generate color. Along with its high brightness, the projector touts a 600,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

NEC has included a number of installation and management features that should be welcomed by users. Among these are:

  • Acceptance and scaling of signals up to 4K (3840x2160)/30Hz for display at the projector's native resolution.
  • A 1.6x manual zoom lens with manual focus and a throw ratio of 1.23 to 2.01
  • Vertical and horizontal lens shift (0 to +60% V; +/- 29% H)
  • Keystone correction (+/- 30 degrees both horizontal and vertical)
  • 360 degree orientation
  • Portrait mode
  • Two HDMI v1.4 ports with HDCP 1.4
  • An integrated HDBaseT receiver for long signal runs over Cat5e/Cat6 with a compatible transmitter.
  • USB port with 2.0 amp support for powering 3rd-party devices.
  • RJ45 LAN port for network control and management
  • Crestron Roomview compatibility
  • Optional wireless dongle (NP05LM1) with support for NEC's MultiPresenter application software to allow content from mobile devices to be broadcast on networked projectors.

The P605UL is backed by a 5-year/20,000-hour warranty with NEC's InstaCare replacement program included. It ships in July at a street price of $3,599.
