Kill the Box in all Endeavors Including Projection Mapping

A dandypunk is a harbinger of nonconformity. This one uses projection mapping in performance art that is a sheer delight to watch. In this short clip of a longer performance you cannot help but feel the energy generated by this type of interactivity with light, images, and concepts which could not be expressed as well in any other way. The message? There is no box. info@adandypunk.commore

Projectors and Wedding Cakes Unite for Unique Reception

3D Projection mapping on a wedding cake is so creative and alluring that if I were attending this wedding reception I might even forget to ask if the cake was chocolate. This couple chose to display a game of Donkey Kong animated by DJ and lighting company Posh Entertainment. If it had been my wedding we'd have used the 3D projector to display Galaga as playing that game was an integral part of our courtship. Great idea and very creative projection.

Striped Facade Projection

This wonderful Urbanscreen.com projection mapping production was sent by an architect friend of mine who tried to explain to me the meaning of parallax as it pertains to this video. Watch as the projected stripes bend the building's facade.

Beaming with Ideas

Everyone is talking about Juan and how happy he makes people. My jaded soul's first response is "It's an ad for LG." But still, it should not detract from the happiness that video artists can bring in so many ways when they get creative with projectors and help the art of 3D projection mapping to evolve. That is the core of the viral success of this ad.

Projectors Involved in Bringing Site to the Blind

These special glasses developed at the University of Oxford, use two cameras and an infrared projector to detect nearby objects. They use a gyroscope, a compass, and a GPS to help orient the wearer. The Images that are created through this data are then projected on transparent OLEDs. Yhe hardest part for any innovator is to have his or her creation reach the public. Hopefully this one will be put on the fast track.

The Penbook: Projecting Paper

The Penbook combines pen paper and digital. It takes hand-written input using a digital pen on real paper that is augmented with a projection screen and could easily redefine how we interact with documents. In this video you can see it at work in a medical records capacity.more

Glowarp and a Shift in Projection Mapping

This mapping project by Glowarp was from a contest held earlier this year. Sit back and enjoy the glorious voice of Placedo Domingo and witness some evolution in 3D projection mapping: the introduction of a concept.

Lumo Interactive Projector for Kids

Originally a Kickstarter project that will become available in the latter part of next year, LUMO is a projector for the home--specifically for kids. It's a self contained ceiling mounted light fixture with an interactive LED projector, a motion sensor, and a tiny computer.more

Casio Projectors Evolve into Airport Virtual Assistants

When lamp free projectors were on the horizon, many of us who are involved with projectors began to speculate just how their existence might change things. After all, if the high expense of a lamp change were not an issue, projectors would be an obvious choice for 24/7 applications utilized across a broad spectrum of industries.more

3D Printing: A Revolution in the Making

We've been keeping an eye on developments in the world of 3D printing for the last couple of years. The subject is getting a lot of attention recently because 3D printing is now cheaper and more efficient and there are whole lot more players in the market. Of course, aside from the fact that 3D printing could have complete and utter game changing impact on our entire consumer culture, our interest for this post lies in the technology's innards which include DLP projection.more

Festival Focuses on Reshaping Public Space through Media Art

I hope to see more of these festivals all over the world. The Screen City Festival is taking place later this month (October 25th – 27th 2013.) in Stavanger/Sandnes Norway. The whole concept comes from an attempt to study the moving image presented in public spaces, on the city`s facades, shop windows and urban venues in order take Stavanger out of its urban context through the vehicle of media art.more

Award Winning Projection Mapping Facade

A large 3D projection mapping installation in Europe that occurs every other Fall, this award winning production by URBANSCREEN 'COHERENT STATES', was featured in the Lichtsicht Biennale as it is known, in 2011/12. 120 meters long and 15 meters high the largest salt works in Western Europe is transformed into a huge projection surface for this projection mapping event and showcase for what we fans know is a most exciting emerging art form.

3D Projection Mapping on a Moving Surface is Like Magic

Production House Bot & Dolly have released this short film which I have officially placed at the top of my list of my favorite videos ever featured here in Creative Projection. "Box" is like nothing I have seen before. It uses robot powered projection mapping on moving objects to make the viewer consider the synthesis of real and digital space. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely by camera. If you watch on thing today let it be this so you can levitate, teleport and escape. And remember "Any significantly advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C. Clarke

Projectors Revolutionize "The Wall" Tour

Roger Waters' "The Wall Live" Concert tour is winding down after 27 performances across Europe. In this brief video, the co-founder of Pink Floyd, expresses his excitement over where projection technology was back in the 1970's (when he started touring) and the magnificent heights it is reaching now.more

Lexus and Projector Enabled Marketing

The jury is still out, (in auto circles anyway)on the Lexus IS300h which was designed to be a cool economically and environmentally sound cruiser. But if one were to look at how its being promoted --it comes off like the performance car of the year! That's the power of brilliant marketing minds and the creative use of projectors.more

Projection Mapping and The Magic Flute

There is not much to share about this delightful display of 3D projection mapping in the arts sphere other than it comes from the Stavanger Concert Hall in Norway where Mozart's Magic Flute was performed last September. Technicians used Motion Graphics with Adobe After Effects and modeling and Softimage XSI for the 3D modeling and animation.

3D Bodies: A Mixed Reality Performance

Check out this mixed reality performance which uses a virtual world as the platform from which to explore 3D immersive spatial virtual and physical displays. You'll witness the performer ´s body interacting with three dimensional space because of computer vision, skeleton tracking, and the output of 3D video projection mapping.

Aqua Top: Kinect and Project in the Tub

It is indicative of just how resistant many are to disconnect from their electronic devices. This is especially true in Japan where researchers at Tokyo's University of Electro-Communications are venturing into use areas previously unexplored and are utilizing Kinect sensors and projectors in the bath tub where they are creating an interactive screen out of opaque water.more

Projection Mapping on a 3Dimensional Bust

In short, this video is just cool. Viewers get to see how 3D projection mapping techniques give life to inanimate objects. A world is created from a stone cast of a human male bust.

Tape Mapping: A Variation on Projection Mapping

The organizers of this festival enlisted the services of Jacques Andre Dupont out of Berlin who delivered a special fusion of two urban art styles to create what the video artist dubbed "Tape Mapping."more

Kickstarting Hologram Projectors

Kickstarter has become one of my favorite sites to visit as recently I've uncovered quite a few projector-related projects in search of funding. The latest is the HOLHO. Due to the innovative optical illusion it creates, the HOLHO can transform all the pictures and videos on Smartphones and Tablets into holograms. Users get a 3D holographic picture from the HOLHO which sits on top or under the smart device's screen.more

Projection Mapping in Commercial Advertising

This video goes behind the scenes during the creation of an unspecified advertisement. It gives great insight into the mapping process and the results that can be achieved with this technology. It begs the question: will 3D projection mapping up the ante for the quality and creativity of TV commercials and advertising in general while reducing the overall expenditure required?

BenQ W1080ST Used in Wasaic Project Projection Mapping

Visual artist and filmmaker Carmen Osterlye went with BenQ's W1080ST and MX660P projectors for her art installations on display on Aug. 2-4 as part of the Wassaic Project's Summer Exhibition and Festival,in Wassaic, N.Y. Den of Blossomy is a projection-mapped Louis XV style parlor featuring floral video patterns as well as four full-color digital prints.more

Van Gogh Comes Alive

This work by Italy's Luca Agnani Digital lighting, 3D & Visual Mapping artist touched my soul. He has taken the works of Vincent Van Gogh and breathed a special kind of air into them that brings them off the canvas and into life. You can see the town awaken and feel you are a participant rather than an observer.

Drawing a line in the Ice with Projection Mapping

Greenpeace's immersive projection mapping event at the Friends House Building in London was intended to bring to light the dangers of Artic drilling and the need to create a global sanctuary around the North Pole. The Choice of the Friends House was a good one as it is a symmetrical building and thus the perfect platform for a 3D projection mapping event of this scale and importance.

Projectors Used in the Art of Dance

It is, of course, a very logical step--that is to combine dance and interactive media to completely alter perception and and communication. This blend, in my view only enriches art because by blending bodies and technology we create a hybrid entity that allows us to reach new heights for communicating ideas. What we are losing verbally we are gaining visually.more

Interactive 3D Projection Mapping in Sydney at the Customs House

They know how to make things fun in Sydney. I love that city. Just last month the these at the Customs House 3D interactive projection mapping display was “Choose a tune and make the Customs House façade dance with you”

Cake Projector

This example of creative projection combines a few of my favorite things: Star Wars,a pico projector and a birthday cake. Which element is the most unlikely? The pico projector of course! Nevertheless, a wonderful cake maker dad with a penchant for electronics pulled it off and projected Princess Leia out of an R2D2 cake with a Netbook on the outside running VGA to a Microvision Show WX on the inside.more

Bordos.Artworks and Invited 3D Projection Mapping Artists in Geneva 2013

Oh how I wish I could have seen this live. It took place last month in Geneva. Participants were invited to be part of an experiment in video projection mapping. The objective was to avoid the typical architectural mapping cliches and to extend video projection with stroboscopes.

Mapping India--with a Projector

Christie Digital is rapidly becoming synonymous with some of the most creative projection mapping displays we've seen. This one can be described with one word--enchanting.

IllumiRoom

IllumiRoom is still in the development stages and we've covered it before. I found this new video however which gives an even better idea of the direction Microsoft is taking with this and since it includes projectors, we are all very excited. Illumiroom uses a Kinect for Windows camera and a projector to obscure the line of demarcation between the virtual world and the organic one. Watch how the system alters the way the room looks, creates motion, extends the field of view, and takes the whole gaming experience to places we'd have only dreamed of a few years back.

Projecting on the Human Body

Studying the human anatomy in a classroom can be excruciatingly dull. I wish I could turn back the clock, return to my hopeless high school and college biology classes and infuse them with a little 3D projection mapping. When the body's systems come alive the impression is a lasting one.

Running man

This is the very first projection mapping event at Pirelli Tower. The tower which has become one of the most recognized symbols of Milan came to life when its 9000 square meter facade awoke and Thomas Dold (vertical running world champion)took to the stairs and raced to the top in under four minutes.

A New Twist on Origami with Projection Mapping

The Butterflies Origami Installation was originally showcased at the Photon 1.0 Exhibition in London. It is the work of Vama Visuals The Photon Project celebrates the visual arts and the trajectory it has taken as a result of the proliferation of technology. In showcasing the work of some of the best projection and performance based artists in London they expand public awareness to the infinite number of possibilities that this medium has to offer.

Interactive Projection Mapping

This is an interactive projection mapping installation puzzle that appears to be controlled by the audience through their smartphones or tablets. It was revealed during the 2013 Light festival in UAE.

Powerful 3D Projection Mapping by Illuminarium3000

There is some great stuff coming out of St Petersburg. This is the second 3D projection mapping example I've seen in the last couple of days produced by Russia's Illuminarium3000. It is not simply that I was drawn to their idea of creating an architectural form out of a human face;it is how ably they convey the truths about the masks we wear and the nature of the human psyche through a very impressive projection mapping installation.

Obscura Digital set to Transform San Francisco's Pier 15 April 17 & 18

When darkness falls on April 17 and 18 2013 why not venture out to Pier 15 in San Francisco? Obscura Digital is planning to transform it for the Exploratorium’s Grand Opening. It's called ‘Emergence.’ They've designed and built ten miniature replicas of the Exploratorium’s façade and will use projection mapping to display natural subjects on the surface of the building, creating the illusion that they are contained within its structure. Art, design, nature and technology come together and projectors are the cornerstone. Here's a video preview of how it will be done:

Projectors and Projection Mapping in Theater

Further proof that projection mapping is making inroads and impact in the world of theater production, this clip from The Satirikon Theater's "Romeo and Juliette" is from 2012. Four Christie projectors were utilized in the mapping process for this event. It is clear that projection mapping enhances every mood and enables a kind of interaction previously impossible on stage. It seems as though projection mapping might ultimately redefine the role of technology and digital artistry in theater

iPad App for Guerrilla Projection

This iPad app called Tagtool certainly falls into the "creative projection" category because it transforms an iPad into a fine instrument of projection art. One can only imagine what could be achieved when each member of a creative team with iPad in hand is turned loose to paint and animate. The messaging possibilities could encompass the subversive to the sublime.more

Raspberry Pi DIY Pico Projector Bike Headlight

We caught a glimpse of pico projectors in use in the biking world back in 2011 when through the magic of the video they took, I was able to watch and admire a couple of Czech artists who took bike safety matters into their own hands using a pico projector. A reader alerted me to the fact that my two artists may have been inspired by the Lightlane Project belonging to Evan Gant and Alex Tee.more

Easter 3D Micro Mapping Installation from Poland's Tving Design

In honor of Good Friday, here is a micro projection mapping project out of Poland produced by Tving Stage Design. With an egg at the cornerstone symbolizing life, images of suffering and death imply that redemption is gained through rebirth. Is everyone else seeing this too?

Projectors and Patriots: Victory in Stalingrad Projection Mapping

This projection mapping event occurred in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad. It is magnificent in the way it transports the spectators back in time. You can see it in their faces.more

A Projector's Place is in the Kitchen

They call it sugar art....and it is. We're not talking store bought cookies here, but the ones in the bakery. You know.....those perfectly decorated gingerbread men, cakes, pies and other delectable edibles?more

Projection Art Illuminates Fine Art School in Nimes

3D projection mapping illuminates the facade of the Fine Art School of Nimes. This Cosmo AV production needs little introduction. It simply exemplifies larger than life image creation through large format projection. In short--it is pure entertainment.

Pool Hall Projector

The local pool hall is the place on the planet where another human might actually think I'm pretty smart in math. While a complete failure in algebra, my geometry skills are not too shabby. I usually know exactly how and where a ball should be hit. The problem is my hands and my eyes rarely do the bidding of my brainmore

Jaguar Projection Mapping

The projection mapping techniques used in the launch of the Jaguar LX failed to grab me until midway with the creators definitely saving the best for last. The music is compelling and the timing superb but dare I say that it might be a tad overstimulating? I sound like the emperor who told Mozart there were "too many notes."

Planetarium Projectors

Big Bear Lake California has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week and so I thought it might be time for a positive projector related story from that city which is not too far from where I grew up in Southern California.more

Projector Yields Bounty in a Storm

This is an example of the unexpected that can happen when someone gets creative with a projector. I'm not certain what would have prompted BMaffit to pick up his projector(with a movie running) and point it outward into the blizzard raging in the Northeast earlier this month...but he did. This video captured the results and with those images set to music, this gentleman has found something that is far more relaxing than the "Sounds of the Rain Forest" CD my kids hoped would make me "more chill." Or did they say "chill out?"more

DIY Projector Laser Show : Party On Garth...Party on Wayne

There is an open source project called MusicBeam everyone should check out before throwing a party.Imagine hosting an 80's Night bash with a music-triggered laser show. All that's required is a laptop, a projector a fog machine and Duran Duran (my suggestion). The software developed by these generous wizards enables everyone (Mac,Winows Linux)to benefit, free of charge. This seems like a very personal mandate to make great parties accessible to the masses.more

Projectors on Center Stage Again

Projectors and projection technology have wowed the crowds at yet another major music venue. This year it was at the Grammys when Carrie Underwood wore the technology in the form of a large skirted Roberto Cavalli gown that became a four and half foot projector screen displaying moving images and flickering colors.

3D Projection in the Garden

It is curious how a 3D projector mapping shrubs and small trees results in visual art so ....natural. This projection mapping shown at Digital Life 2012 in the Romaeuropa Festival was like watching a dream reveal itself. My home is surrounded by forest and I enjoyed the projection artists portray a day's first light in a futuristic way that changed my perception of space.

Truck vs Projector-- Projector Wins

In ad effort to relay to the public just how durable their SuperQuad 3D projector really is, DigitalProjection decided to run it over with a 3.3 ton truck. They rolled over it six times to show that the projector would not only survive the abuse, but would continue to perform. As you can see, the movie played on...

Projection Mapping on a Cylindrical Building

This was an ambitious setting for 3D projection mapping but PostPanic--the Amsterdam based creative studio pulled it off masterfully. The cylindrical shape of a distinctive building in the area provided the canvas for a four minute abstract and graphic interpretation of the story of "The Human Age."more

Vertical Dancing: Projectors in 21st Century Artistic Expression

This remarkable combination of dance and projection was created for Spain's TV3 charitable event "La Marato." They call this a vertical dance show but the wonder of it is lost in that translation. The video mapping comes from Tigrelab, a design and multimedia communication studio based in Barcelona and the amazing dance with light is the work of Sacude-- Spanish aerial choreographers and dancers whose craft blossoms at the intersection of 21st Century art and technology.
