More on Netflix........
Anyone who loves movies should consider using Netflix as a source for DVDs for two reasons: It's convenient and it's cheap. In case you are not yet aware of it, Netflix is an Internet-based online DVD rental company. But it's a rental company with a new idea: For a flat fee of $21.99 a month, you can essentially borrow as many movies as you want from them, and keep them for as long as you want without ever worrying about late return fees.
How it works: You set up an account online, which takes about two minutes. Then you peruse the Netflix database of thousands of DVDs. Choose the ones you want to see and put them in your request queue with a click of your mouse. Netflix will send you the first three you select immediately. They come with return envelopes, postage prepaid by Netflix. After watching each movie, you put it in the return envelope and drop it in the mail. Once Netflix gets it back, they automatically send you the next movie in your request queue. At any given time you can have up to three movies in your possession. It's about as simple as it gets.
Better than Blockbuster: In addition to the simplicity, Netflix gives you services you don't get from the local rental store. For example, it lets you search for movies any way you want. You want to see all movies starring Ashley Judd or Antonio Banderas? Just do a search and you get all the movies they've been in. In addition, movies are rated with their MPAA ratings, along with professional reviews and viewer opinions. So you get a quick assessment of whether the movie is worth your time. That is something you definitely can't get when randomly searching the racks at Blockbuster.
This service isn't for everyone. If you rent less than five movies a month it is usually cheaper to use the local store (assuming you always return them on time and avoid the late fees). But considering the time spent driving back and forth, wandering the aisles looking for something worthwhile, and standing in lines, that is a tough way to save a few bucks.
However most home theater enthusiasts watch a lot more than five movies a month. For these folks Netflix is a no-brainer. You get a huge selection, no late fees, online convenience, online reviews, and you save money. (Average 3 movies per week and you end up paying about $1.83 per movie.)
