Shipments of Digital Light Processing subsystems pass 750,000 units
TI ships 250,000 DLP subsystems in last six months
Dallas, Texas - April 25th, 2001: Texas Instruments (TI) announced today that shipments of DLPTM subsystems had topped the 750,000 mark. TI had announced only in September last year that shipments of DLPTM subsystems - which are at the heart of many of the industry's most popular projectors - had exceeded 500,000 since the first units were delivered to customers in early 1996.
"This is another very significant milestone in our mission to make DLP technology the market leader," said John Van Scoter, General Manager of DLPTM Products and Vice President of Texas Instruments. "From the time shipments first started in early 1996, it took us two and a half years to ship our first 100,000 systems - and now, we've shipped 250,000 units in just under six months. We're very confident that it won't be long until we announce our one millionth shipment - which will be a superb achievement. The demand we're seeing - especially for sub-3lb projectors which are uniquely enabled by DLP technology - is phenomenal: the good news is, we believe we're well placed to meet that demand."
The success of DLPTM technology can be attributed in part to the fact that it uniquely enables the development of projectors which feature the industry's leading combination of very low weight and high brightness - the market for which is growing at an astonishing rate. According to Stanford Resources, Inc., an iSuppli Company, the market for projectors weighing less than three pounds - all of which are currently uniquely enabled by DLPTM technology - will grow from 30,000 units in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2006 as increasing numbers of users discover the value of being able to make presentations anywhere their assignment takes them.
"As customers place increasing value on the convenience and flexibility afforded by microportable projectors," said Sweta Dash, Director of Projection Research at Stanford Resources, "DLP technology is uniquely well placed in a market which is likely to see rapid growth over the next few years. We believe DLP technology will play a key role in that market growth."
Representative of this exciting new breed of tiny, yet highly performant, projectors were the products announced by Philips, PLUS Corporation and Sharp at last year's Infocomm International show. Each company unveiled a 1.3kg (2.9lb) projector capable of delivering 800 ANSI lumens - more than enough brightness for 'lights on' presentations - at XGA resolution. NEC announced a similar unit weighing 1.5kg (3.3lbs). Since then, other companies - notably InFocus with its LP130, Proxima Ultralight X350 and ASK M3, Compaq with its MP2800, and Mitsubishi - have announced products around the 3lb mark capable of delivering close to 1,000 lumens or more.
It is not just in the market for business projectors, however, that DLPTM technology is leading the field. Today, there is virtually no video wall manufacturer whose product line-up does not feature products using DLPTM subsystems. In the market for high brightness (5,000+ ANSI lumens) projectors, it is estimated that projectors using DLPTM technology have captured more than 70% market share. In the world of home entertainment, three household name Japanese companies - Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Panasonic - have announced an innovative new generation of large screen home entertainment systems using DLPTM technology. And DLP CinemaTM technology is poised to enable the dream of digital cinema to become a reality.
Today, TI supplies DLPTM subsystems to more than thirty of the world's top projector manufacturers, who then design, manufacture and market projectors based on DLPTM technology. There are now over fifty products based on DLPTM technology in the market. Over the past four years, DLPTM technology-based projectors have consistently won some of the audio-visual industry's most prestigious awards, including, in June 1998, an Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
