CHRISTIE DIGITAL AND BOEING DIGITAL CINEMA TEAM UP WITH BROADWAY TELEVISION NETWORK TO PRESENT FIRST 'ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMMING'
- Christie Digital's DigiPro™ and Boeing Digital Cinema Deliver BroadwayCinema™ hit "Jekyll & Hyde" in Historic Pacific Theatre -
Cypress, California - (May 10, 2001) - Christie Digital Systems with Boeing digital cinema demonstrated the future of alternative digital showing at the historic Pacific Theatre in Hollywood on May 1st, 2001. The award-winning DigiPro projector featuring DLP Cinema™ technology showcased Broadway Television Network's production of Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical starring David Hasselhoff.
"We have just verified a very bright future for digital cinema and digital content distribution. We are yet another step forward in moving from film to the flexible world of digital," remarks Michael J. Mooney, director of Digital Cinema at Christie Digital Systems USA.
The Jekyll & Hyde presentation represents a unique alternative program projected with the DigiPro digital cinema projector and distributed for display via Boeing digital cinema's secure end-to-end communication system. The content was played back using a QuVIS Inc. QuBit server. Christie Digital's DigiPro projector features DLP Cinema technology, 13000 ANSI lumens, a contrast ratio of over 1000:1 and complete compatibility with 720-line and 1080-line HDTV standards.
Boeing digital cinema is a network system that digitally transmits first-run films and other alternative media directly to movie theatres via satellite-based and fiber-optic networks.
The musical was screened in high definition and 5.1 surround sound to an invited audience on May 1st at the Pacific Theatre in Los Angeles, operated by the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television's Entertainment Technology Center. Broadway Television Network captured Jekyll & Hyde live in performance on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre in New York and distributed the production via pay per view television and to paying audiences at select digital cinemas on Saturday, March 10th.
The vision of digital cinema appeared two years ago with the insight that high performance projection systems offered the technological promise of replacing film. Over the past year, Christie Digital's DigiPro has captivated audiences in several digital cinema/digital distribution demonstrations notably, Bounce (November 2000) and, more recently, the screening premiere of SPY kids™ (March 2001). The presentation of Jekyll & Hyde as the first non-film program distributed for digital cinema display is a springboard for alternative programming events to find their way into the multiplex.
Mooney continues, "The benefit of digital projectors is to offer theatre owners greater flexibility of content. In the future you'll go to theatres to see live and pre-recorded presentations of sporting events and even musical concerts. It's all about entertaining audiences with unique viewing experiences. Digital makes viewing quicker, clearer and more real while maintaining image integrity time and time again."
As Bruce Brandwen, founder and CEO of Broadway Television Network attests, "Once you see the clarity of the picture and hear the lushness of the sound in a stadium-seating cinema environment, consumers will have a compelling reason to bring the whole family to their local digital cinema theatre for a truly unique and wonderful experience."
