New InFocus X1 to Drive ''Multi-Use'' Projector Category

Press Release  |  Oct 15, 2002

Market Leader Leverages Extensive Research to Offer Best-in-Class Projector

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2002--InFocus(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:INFS) (OSE:IFC), the worldwide leader in digital projection, announces it has targeted a critical new market segment for the projector industry, the multi-use category, with the launch of the InFocus X1. Customers in this category include small-to-medium businesses, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and educators who want a projector that is designed for high performance both at work and at home.

IDC recently reported that 35 percent of business IT professionals would also use a business projector at home, if it were available and technically capable, most likely in a home entertainment environment. With the X1, InFocus is setting an industry benchmark in digital projection to meet the needs of those customers in this new multi-use category. The X1's performance, 'best-in-class' video and portability create an ideal product for this multi-use category and expand InFocus' customer base.

The capabilities of the X1 allow customers to use the projector for more than just traditional Microsoft PowerPoint(R) presentations. During business hours, the outstanding video quality of the X1 makes it perfect for such uses as integrating MPEG, QuickTime or Flash files into a presentation; showing an advertising campaign on DVD; demonstrating a new Web site; or showing a movie during lunch. After work, customers can easily transport the X1 projector and dramatically enhance their home entertainment experience by playing video games, watching DVDs with the family, inviting friends over to watch "the big game" or sharing vacation photos.

With a street price of US$1,699 (Euro 1,799 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa excluding VAT, US$1,699 in Asia-Pacific), the new X1 leads the industry in providing low cost of ownership with best-in-class video quality and ease of use. Compared to other projectors in the multi-use category, the InFocus X1 boasts the highest contrast ratio (2000:1) and low cost of ownership through a 3000 hour lamp life. It also offers outstanding video quality with Faroudja DCDi(TM) video processing and a 0.55 DMD chip from Texas Instruments for sharp, colorful images. The X1 produces bright, high quality displays at 1000 lumens and native SVGA resolution that easily meet the needs of business presentations and provides outstanding projection for playing games or watching movies at home.

"Only InFocus is offering this combination of image quality, video performance and low cost of ownership to customers looking for a multi-use projector," said Candace Petersen, vice president of corporate marketing and strategy at InFocus. "By meeting the needs of business customers who also want to use the projector at home, the X1 expands the projector market and clearly illustrates InFocus' leadership in pioneering high-performance products."

InFocus conducted an industry-exclusive, yearlong research effort to determine what end users desire in a projector. The X1 is the latest in InFocus' line of digital projectors to incorporate design and packaging elements, based on that research, that significantly simplify projector use. Usability enhancements include color-coded cables and a quick-start card for fast and easy set-up, cell phone-like intuitive menus and a keypad located on the top of the projector, which provides access to the majority of the projector's functionality. The projector's 6.8-pound (3.1-kilogram), compact form factor also makes the X1 easy to transport between meeting rooms or classrooms, or between home and workplace.

The X1 is the first product co-developed by InFocus Corporation and Funai Electric, a Japan-based technology development and consumer electronics company.

Warranties and Availability
The InFocus X1 will be available in mid-November with an estimated street price of US$1,699 (Euro 1,799 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa excluding VAT, US$1,699 in Asia-Pacific). Through March 31, 2003, InFocus is offering a free three-year extended service coverage in addition to the standard two-year warranty, when customers register their X1 projector within 30 days of purchase.
