ITASCA, IL, September 5, 2003—Marantz America today announced the introduction of its VP-12S3 High-Definition Projector featuring DLP™ technology, a high-end video display device that includes significant upgrades from the critically acclaimed VP-12S2 to deliver a spectacular level of home theater image quality. The VP-12S3 incorporates the leading edge Texas Instruments HD2+ DMD™ chip and other refinements to provide superlative high-definition DLP projector performance, along with a host of useful features that offer exceptional installation and calibration flexibility.

Extraordinary High-Definition Video Projector Performance
The Marantz VP-12S3 is designed to deliver extraordinary video projector performance in every respect. It utilizes the latest Texas Instruments 16 x 9 high-definition HD2+ DMD chip in conjunction with a newly developed 1280 x 720 pixel panel and advanced DLP™ technology to deliver dramatically improved sharpness and color accuracy, with 700 ANSI lumens brightness and a remarkable 3800:1 contrast ratio.

Image quality is further enhanced by the use of a new 200-watt DC lamp, which delivers higher, more uniform brightness while minimizing the flicker that can result from AC-type lamps.

Its light passes through Marantz's exclusive ORCA (Optically Reproducing Color Accurately) filter, which filters the light to achieve better color accuracy, with more realistic reproduction of green hues. The light is then sent through the projector's improved 5x-speed color wheel, employing an additional dark green ND (neutral density) filter segment to reduce green video noise in dark scenes. To achieve optimum image sharpness, the VP-12S3 utilizes Minolta lenses specially built for Marantz. These custom lenses have double-sealed optics and mechanisms to prevent light leakage, keep out dust and eliminate any "halo" effect, and now include a variable (two-step) iris for optimum brightness in the widest variety of home theater installations.

The VP-12S3 features progressive scan output with true 3:2 pulldown detection and utilizes 10-bit digital gamma processing along with Faroudja chipsets, which incorporate patented DCDi™ Directional Correlational Deinterlacing technology, plus video decoding and enhancement technologies to deliver extraordinary image quality from any video source.

The VP-12S3 is compatible with virtually every digital and analog video program source, and for greater versatility and installation flexibility, includes dual component video inputs, as well as a DVI digital video input with HDCP (High-Definition Content Protection), to accept the signal from a DTV set-top box, DV camcorder or other digital video source and maintain a pure digital signal path from source to display. In addition, the VP-12S3 provides HD component video, S-video, composite video and analog RGB connections.

The projector can operate in either native progressive scan mode or upconvert video sources, depending on the signal source. The VP-12S3 can display a native 720p progressive scan image from a DVD-Video player, HDTV set-top box or computer up to XGA resolution, or an upconverted image from any NTSC source, as well as 480i and 1080i images.

Expanded Custom Installation Versatility
The Marantz VP-12S3 includes a host of new features that offer unprecedented custom installation flexibility, operating in conjunction with an expanded menu system that enables easy setup, yet provides extensive calibration facilities including a wider range of color temperature and gamma adjustments. The projector now includes an automatic color temperature adjustment system, which uses a removable sensor to accurately calibrate the projector to the correct 6500° K color temperature. All functions can be accessed via the projector's newly redesigned, backlit remote control, which provides easy operation even in darkened home theater environments.

The projector can be optimized to display both 16:9 widescreen and standard 4:3 aspect ratios, using a choice of viewing modes.

The VP-12S3's Lens Shift feature enables the image to be shifted up or down and projected through the upper or lower portion of the lens; this function and its horizontal keystone correction enable the VP-12S3 to achieve correct picture geometry if the projector is not mounted exactly parallel to the screen.

For integrated operation in a custom installation, the VP-12S3 includes remote in/out connections, an RS-232C control port and two DC trigger connections that can trigger two different operations-for example, the VP-12S3 can be set to reconfigure a dual-aspect ratio projection screen whenever the aspect ratio of the program source changes from 16:9 to 4:3.

The Marantz VP-12S3 will be available in November 2003 at a suggested retail price of $12,999. An optional long-throw lens version is available at a suggested retail price of $15,999.
