New 1080p Reviews

This is not normally the time of year we see a lot of new 1080p models for review, but this year is different...

We've just posted Bill's review of the Acer H7531D. This model has captured a lot of attention with its 50,000:1 contrast spec--quite unusual for a projector under $1,000. Unfortunately, despite some exceptional black levels in dark scenes, we are not as enthused by this projector as we'd hoped. Check the review for details.

Currently on the bench is another sub-$1,000 model, the Vivitek H1081. That review should be up by early to mid-next week.

Following that will be the Sony VPL-HW30ES. This is Sony's new 3-D enabled 1080p home theater model that retails for $3,699. Nice to see prices coming down on 3-D 1080p. Assuming the HW30 arrives on schedule and we don't have any problems with the sample, that review will be posted the week of July 11.

REALLY looking forward to the review of Sony VPL-HW30ES. I've heard that this projector is initially only going to be sold in Europe, and not the US. Is that true?

Glenn, if you read the press release, there's no mention of Sony distributing the new unit in Europe only.

I went back and did some research. It looks like the original announcement listed Japan and Euro release dates only. A follow-up press release a few days later confirmed that it would come out in the U.S., but the wording was strange and seemed to indicate it would only be available through high-end a/v 'specialists' and custom installers, which does not seem to make sense given that the target price screams 'retail'.
