Home Video and 3D Survey

You might notice that a new category of projectors has just been added to ProjectorCentral, as well as a new 3D Survey...

After many intriguing and worthy suggestions from readers, we've had to make the hard decision to call our new category Home Video Projectors. These are projectors which are designed for the home, but don't need the dedicated darkened theater environment to perform at their best. Generally, home video projectors are brighter and lower in contrast than their home theater counterparts, they tend to be less expensive and often lower in resolution. Unlike most home theater projectors, they tend to be portable and have on-board audio, although this is not always the case. They are great for big screen gaming, Internet, TV and movies. They are often used in a living room or family room or even back yards where no particular effort is made to make the viewing space very dark.

We could as easily call them Living Room Projectors, or Home Entertainment Projectors, or Multimedia Projectors, or what have you. But we think Home Video Projectors will be sufficient to distinguish this emerging group of consumer-oriented, home-based projector from the more classic home theater projector.

At any rate, this new category will help readers focus on this unique class of projectors, with its own Top Ten list (see upper left navigation bar), and reviews collected together in one section of the site (see home page).

NEW 3D SURVEY. For the last two summers we have run a survey to help us all understand the evolving interest of readers in 3D projection. It is time once again to run it to see if interest in 3D has grown, diminished, or remained constant over the past couple of years. Please take a few seconds to answer this survey so we can get the best possible idea of your thinking on the topic of 3D. You can find it on the home page, or in the right column next to this posting. Thanks very much for your input. We appreciate your time and thoughts. Once you vote, you can see how everyone else is voting on this always hot topic.

Best regards,

I don't like 3D very much it makes my head spin. I like 2D on a big screen.

I feel the passive 3d will be the future format for 3d projectors as it has many user friendly and acceptable features. No scope for active ones.

Passive 3D should be incorporated into the LCD or DLP projectors because of its advantages over the active 3D system. The main one being the low cost of 3D glasses and they are light-weight therefore comfortable to wear also picture qualities are good. I am all for passive 3D
