Sony's new HW40ES Home Theater Projector
Sony's new HW40ES for home theater is an outstanding value for its aggressive $2,499 price tag...
Sony is certainly doing interesting things in home theater these days. The release of the dramatic native 4K resolution VPL-VW600ES last fall addressed the upper end of the consumer price range at $14,999. Now, with the introduction of the VPL-HW40ES at just $2,499, Sony has gone solidly mass market, with a product lower in price than ever for a Sony 1080p projector. (See Bill's review of the Sony HW40ES).
The HS40ES represents Sony's first direct head-to-head price competition with best-selling models like the Epson 5030UB and the Panasonic AE8000. For several years Epson and Panasonic have dominated the mid-$2000 price niche with aggressively priced high performance models, while Sony has remained content to position its products about $1,000 above them in price. But no longer. The HW40ES has arrived as a very competitive alternative, giving home theater enthusiasts who want to keep their projector budgets under $3000 a new option. This new development will definitely create some interesting competitive turbulence in the mid-$2000 niche.
