DATALAND'S most ambitious illusion is architecture.

Conceived by Rafik Anadol Studio, DATALAND is a permanent museum experience located within the Grand LA in downtown Los Angeles. Gallery A, the Data Pavilion, treats projection as a spatial medium, a vehicle for immersion. Light gathers, flows, expands, and contracts seamlessly across the walls, floor, ceiling, and mirrored columns until the boundaries of the room lose their authority. Eighty-four Epson projectors sustain the effect. Their presence is reduced to the hidden structure upon which the environment depends.

The Data Pavilion is preceded by a room devoted to its interpretation. A series of vertical dvLED displays introduces the concepts underlying the experience: artificial intelligence trained on environmental datasets, biometric sensing, and responsive systems. Visitors are fitted with biometric sensors and scent emitters before venturing deeper into the museum.

DATALAND Pavilion is Framed as an Encounter

No single surface serves as the canvas. The room itself becomes the medium.

A corridor gives way to a mirrored foyer and dual escalators that descend into the cavernous space. Attention is drawn immediately to the room itself. The art is already in motion.

A mirrored column catches the eye first. The artwork plays across its surface. Reflections of the gallery, its visitors, and the surrounding architecture move across the glass. Behind the escalator, mirrors along the wall extend the effect, revealing pieces of the Pavilion before the room can be understood as a whole.

The descent continues. The walls, floor, ceiling, columns, and reflections assemble into a coherent environment. No single surface serves as the canvas. The room itself assumes that role.

Once inside the Data Pavilion, the scale becomes impossible to ignore. Abstract forms sweep across the room in continuous motion, expanding into vast fields of color and shapes before contracting into intricate patterns derived from environmental datasets. The imagery is in constant flux.

Then the Projection System Begins to Emerge

Recessed throughout the Pavilion, 84 Epson projectors operate as the unseen foundation of the experience.

The 84 Epson EB-PQ2220B laser projectors are recessed into openings along the upper walls and ceiling, visible primarily through the light emitted from their lenses. Their placement keeps the technology present without dominating the environment. Even after locating the projectors, the illusion persists. Walls curve seamlessly into the floor. Images travel across architectural transitions without interruption.

That effect rests upon a considerable amount of engineering.

The EB-PQ2220B is a 20,000-lumen 4K laser projector designed for large venues and permanent installations. Across the Pavilion, Epson's 3LCD imaging system, 4K Crystal Motion technology, and high native contrast help maintain the visual cohesion upon which the installation depends. Saturated colors retain their vibrancy without overwhelming the space. Darker sequences retain convincing black levels. Just as importantly, the image preserves consistency across a projection canvas assembled from the massive collection of projectors.

Reliability is equally important. Each projector's IP5X-rated hermetically sealed optical engine, filterless cabinet, and 20,000-hour light source is designed to support continuous operation in demanding installation environments.

The Illusion Requires an Invisible Layer

Behind the scenes, Scalable Display Technologies synchronizes every projector into a unified visual experience.

Image quality alone cannot sustain an installation of this scale. It is equally dependent on synchronization, calibration, geometric correction, and edge blending. Those responsibilities fall to Scalable Display Technologies, whose camera-assisted software continuously measures and adjusts the projection system, aligning each of the independent projectors into a single coherent canvas. The process is largely invisible to visitors. Its effects are not.

Without that layer, the Pavilion would reveal its construction. Projector boundaries would emerge. Architectural transitions would become visible. The environment would fragment into its constituent parts.

The Implications Extend Beyond the Museum

The Pavilion offers a glimpse into projection's potential as an architectural medium.

The significance of the Data Pavilion extends beyond its role as a museum installation. The Pavilion demonstrates what is possible when projection is treated as an architectural medium rather than a display technology. The audience does not gather before a screen. It moves through the image. Space becomes part of the composition.

For all the discussion surrounding artificial intelligence, biometric sensing, environmental datasets, projection systems, and calibration software, the lasting impression of DATALAND's Data Pavilion is surprisingly simple. Visitors do not leave discussing lumens, resolution, or edge blending. They leave discussing the experience of the room itself.

That outcome is significant. The success of the Pavilion is measured not by the visibility of its technology, but by its disappearance. Eighty-four projectors, calibration software, environmental datasets, scent emitters, biometric sensors, and artificial intelligence operate continuously and in sync with each other beneath the surface of the experience. The room, not the technology, commands the audience's attention.

DATALAND's Data Pavilion requires an extraordinary amount of technology. Convincing visitors to forget about it may be its greatest achievement.
