Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering (DCAE) COSFORD selects projectiondesign F20 sx+
Fredrikstad, Norway, 19 July 2007 - Four F20 sx+ projectors from projectiondesign have been selected, installed and integrated by European partner Antycip Simulation for use in a new synthetic environment trainer at the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering (DCAE) COSFORD, located in Shopshire, UK. Three of the projectors are being used on a 150-degree wraparound screen in conjunction with a CompactUTM digital correction system from 3D perception, which allows for edge-blending, warping, and precise colour-matching of the projectors. The fourth unit is used as a hot spare.
The so-called Synthetic Environment Procedural Trainer (or 'SEPT2') has been designed by specialist training company Pennant Training Systems Ltd to provide students with a realistic airfield environment in which they can safely practice their aircraft ground-handling and marshalling skills, on a variety of fixed and rotary-winged aircraft.
John Mould, Commercial Development Manager of Antycip's UK Simulation Team, takes up the story: "The end-user in this case is the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering. They had an existing simulator at Cosford which needed upgrading, in terms of both display technology and visual content. The job went out to tender and was won by Pennant, who in turn partnered with Antycip Simulation to carry out the project management and installation with its projection engineering team."
Antycip Simulation then supplied, integrated and installed the projectors, the edge-blending and warping unit, and the cylindrical screen necessary to display a convincing and realistic simulation environment. According to John Mould, the projectors provide a computer-generated display of the airfield and aircraft, while the instructor controls the training exercise and can insert hazards and change weather conditions. Possible training scenarios include engine start-up and shut-down, as well as general marshalling.
The F20 sx+ features SXGA+ resolution (1,400 x 1,050) and brightness of up to 3,300 lumens. They utilise DLP® technology from Texas Instruments and are designed for visually demanding applications. They also incorporate a full implementation of Texas Instruments BrilliantColorTM technology for the perfect brightness, clarity and contrast of projected images.
The projectors were supplied through the Norwegian manufacturer's UK distributor RGB Communications. They were ideal for the job because, according to John Mould: "It is known that we can trust the quality of projectiondesign DLP projectors they have proved time and time again to offer the best price / performance radio. This particular model has the wide-lens, short-throw optics required for the project. Antycip Simulation has built a great experience across Europe in the integration and installation of customized projection solutions and this project has been a success for our customer Pennant Training Systems Ltd, which is always the first objective of the Antycip team in any software or projection project."
